Queen Elizabeth II died on the 8th. Every day, TV shows a sad London cityscape, but for me, it’s a nostalgic one.
It was just around this time. . . . .
A customer in Germany was migrating from our cloud to Microsoft Azure. The customer CTO complained to the Microsoft HQ that the local subsidiary’s response was bad and unreliable, and the Microsoft HQ threatened our executives that they would review the global storastic alliance. On the day I returned to Tokyo from San Francisco, where I was on a trip for another business, I was summoned by an executive and was told, `Go to London now and solve the situation! ‘, she was instructed.
On the same day, I completed the procedures for my overseas business trip, including air and hotel, at the same speed as my domestic one.
A week after San Francisco, I was in London.
At London, all the people involved gathered together, including sales representatives from the German local subsidiary, engineers from the UK who are in charge of infrastructure, and my counter who is in charge of alliances in the European region.
I hold a countermeasures meeting.
Conversation is, of course, in English. Attendees from Japan are myself and one young man.
On the first day, people with different cultural backgrounds, races, and native languages criticize each other and claim that they are not responsible. I devoted myself to unraveling the facts, having lunch and tea together.
As a result, it was found that all the participants had misunderstood the situation in some way, or had refrained from talking to each other, and were not engaging in conversations that went into each other’s territory.
In Europe, there are many cases where the country where the client company has its business base and the country where the client company uses the cloud infrastructure are different. Naturally, our sales bases, infrastructure operation bases, Microsoft sales bases, and cloud operation bases are also different. It turned out that there were many challenges. That night, all the participants had a lively meal at a pub near the London office and then parted ways.
On the second day, the solution part went surprisingly smoothly. We confirmed each other’s role and responsibilities, and let them decide what to do and by when. There is professionalism. From the technical side, ideas for operational work and proposals for improving the timing of reporting began to emerge. From the sales side, detailed explanations of what kind of person the customer is and what position the customer company has within them began to appear. It was ready in the evening.
On the third day, the sales person explained the action plan to the customer and obtained the customer’s consent. From here, the recovery plays.
Successfully we completed the cloud migration.
London is a diverse society where cultures and races from all over the world gather, and not only the Anglo-Saxons have a big face. Here, someone must be advancing this process on a daily basis. It was a unique experience in Japan. In that sense, London is a special place, and the existence of the British Queen, who has ruled there, is special.
